Why does NEXT open its stores at 6AM on Boxing Day? Because our society is addicted to instant aquisition, leading to unsustainable over consumption. I was working today (our department has slightly more justification for being open than NEXT, although not for the hours we were there) and passed through the Gyle Centre where this was taken. A horrible thing for a company to do to their staff, what a way to ruin their Christmas. It sends me apoplectic when businesses say long opening hours and not observing civilized trading during annual Festivals is due to us living in a multi-cultural, 24 hr society. Would non Christians really be offended if they had to take a couple of days off at Christmas/Easter? Society is only 24 hours due to businesses following that trend in the first place out of greed rather than resisting it. Greed has to be one of the most destructive forces and its corrupting our civilisation whilst killing our planet.
