Ferrybridge Power Station
Our journey today took us along the industrial area of the River Aire. There are many disused coal mines along here and due to the mining subsidence and permanently waterlogged ground, the land cannot be used for agriculture. However this wetland is now a haven for wildlife.
The photo shows Ferrybridge Power Station which covers a massive area.
Coal has been transported here - until fairly recently by water - from over 30 collieries throughout the north east.
Once we left this stretch of the river we turned onto a much prettier area, flanked on either side buy bullrushes, waterlilies, and all manner of weed both on the surface and below. The water is really clear and you can see the riverbed in places. I tried to get photos of the hundreds of dragonflies flashing blue on the surface but they flitted so fast I just couldn't capture them.
Now we are moored up in the rain with the hatches battened down.
