In The Occupied Territory

I don’t want to talk about it

The source of endless arguments in this part of the world are these things.
As you can see on the packet, they are called Butteries.
Or are they. The alternative name for them are Rowies.
Yet very few bakers sell them as such.
In the city most folk call them the latter.
In the countryside, the former.
They were originally made with lard and flour and salt. And we’re designed for the fishermen to take out to see with them.
Staple food.

The current world champion buttery maker lives in our village.
David Bowie’s son makes them and loves them.
One of the Hairy Bikers likes them also.

The two sides will never come together over this, but where they do agree is they are not called rolls or cookies as they are called sometimes in neighbouring Peterhead.
