Enjoying the view

Today I was leading the walking group on the walk starting from Okehampton.  The weather forecast didn't look too bad so I set off fairly optimistically.  We had a fairly heavy downpour just as we arrived but once it had eased we ventured out heading up onto Dartmoor.  There were some impressive dark clouds around but we managed a short coffee stop admiring the view of Yes Tor.  As we continued to wind our way alongside the stone wall I noticed a lamb on the top of the wall.  It dropped down to join its mother as we passed by.  We found the remains of the copper mine and made our way down the West Okement River where we stopped for lunch, see extra.  At this point it started to rain again resulting in a very quick lunch.  Slightly bedraggled we continued down into the quarry and alongside an old lime kiln and then under the Meldon Viaduct.  By now the rain had eased off and we happily walked along the West Devon Way and across the golf course where several golfers were out, maybe there hadn't been so much rain here.  Then it was on through the woods with views of the castle, a wander alongside the river and then through Simmons Park and back up to the station.  

Most of us then enjoyed a welcome tea and cake.  It was a good trip out with a fairly large group none of whom had done this particular route.  All agreed it was a very varied and interesting relatively short walk.
