The tortoise situation is getting out of control. Another one turned up in the road, risking life and shell from traffic, so of course it had to join the rest. It immediately began a fight-to-the-death with Errol, the resident male, so obviously male too. I called him Vinnie and he now lives on the terrace where he comes to the door every morning to demand food. On top of this a guy turned up with another (female) specimen which he'd been looking after for 9 days to keep it safe, but was now going away. Somehow he must have heard of "mad tortoise woman" and thought he should bring her here. I haven't got a name for her yet, but she's a pretty thing with no shell damage and a bit smaller than the rest. That makes 8 adult tortoises altogether, in a small garden/terrace. Today Buster found a cache of 4 eggs which one of them had left in the soil. I covered them over to protect them from seagulls/the gardener's strimmer. My lettuce bill is getting higher.
