A Small Walk

Not so much a short walk as a circular walk from Gullane, along the edge of the golf course and which revealed several interesting Small Things. 

The first (not especially small) was a traditional sundial mounted on a plinth behind the parish church (extra 1). Having only the two faces, this clearly had been removed from the corner of a building, such as this but there was no information to hand. The initials WY and MA appear on one face but the date on the other face is obscured, I would guess C17 or C18.

We then found 'small things' in the form of ants, feeding on a Cotoneaster growing over the wall of the ruined former parish church, St Andrew, fast-moving they crawled in and out of the buds (extra 2), outnumbering the few Bumblebees.

Our route took us up Gullane Hill, passing large private gardens, in which a roe deer, our smallest species, was dashing back and forth until finding an escape route and running away up the hill.

At the rocky top, with a scattering of Bell Heather and Wild Thyme, the Small Copper butterfly (main Picture) had a choice menu. Views were extensive from the Garleton Hills, towards the Pentlands, over the Forth and Gullane Beach as we descended along the Bents to the carpark for a refreshing ice cream before strolling via Goose Green back to the car.
