LOSING THE BATTLE.....
.....but winning the war. A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned to Mr. HCB that perhaps we (that being “the Royal We”, you understand) shouldn’t be cutting our grass so short, but leaving it, complete with buttercups and daisies, so that the bees and other pollinating insects would benefit.
In fact, when I counted the daisies in our lawn and sent them off to the “Every Flower Counts” survey, we were told that one square metre of our lawn was producing 0.01 grams of nectar per day, our whole lawn is producing 0.4 grams per day equivalent to 0.1 sugar cubes per day, which is enough to sustain 39 honey bees per day.
The lawn has now been uncut for over two weeks and whilst sitting having our coffee, and admiring the garden,Mr. HCB said that he really should cut it soon. I asked him why and over our coffee, we had a little discussion about it. He has agreed that he will just cut the edges of the lawn to tidy it up, and leave it for at least another week, after which he will set the blades on the lawn mower higher, so that the daisies and buttercups grow back quicker. So a compromise and I am happy with that at the moment.
I have made two butterfly and bee watering stations this morning and have sown several packs of seeds into some of the raised beds that are no longer productive because they have Council tree roots in them but after a very emotional day yesterday, don’t feel inclined to do very much today.
Thank you for all your kind comments yesterday, which are much appreciated. The service went very well and the healing process has begun in some family rifts, which is good.
