Elephant day!
Today we had an amazing day trip. We went to the Seaside Retreat for Elephants and feed bananas to the elephants and then went in the river with them and washed them. They were amazingly gentle and it was one of the best things I have ever done, almost hugging an elephant. When we got out the youngest one tapped Jim, Carys and I on the arm and then when we looked she sprayed us with water from her trunk. She took pity on Will and didn't do it to him!
After a small refreshment we headed to a local waterfall. To be honest this was the most disappointing thing we did all holiday, not because it was small, after all it was the dry season, but because it was dirty. So much rubbish, more than I had seen else where. I wanted to litter pick. Very disappointing.
From there we headed off to raft down a river on bamboo rafts. That was fun. The river was shallow due to the season but it was also relatively quiet (well I had Will on my raft so everything is relative!). We saw snakes in the trees!
We also went to a turtle sanctuary run by the Thai Navy and volunteers from the UK. So many turtles of a variety of shapes and sizes. such a shame that humans are screwing up their ability to survive. We really need to take a long hard look at what we are doing to this planet, it's the only one we have!
Finally we went on to restaurant where we had a buffet meal of Thai food. It was very nice. The kids had a kid friendly meal, but they were also allowed to help themselves to the buffet so they did.
It was a very good day and we were impressed with the tour guide and company, so much so I am planning to book another day trip with the same company later in the week.
