Stacks of Duncansby

Left home this morning just before 09:00 for the long journey north up the A9. Stopped at Killiecrankie, Evanton and Golspie for food and/or dog walks. The weather became steadily drier the further north we drove until, just as we crossed into Caithness, some blue sky appeared. I love the way the place names become steadily more Norse- sounding; Lybster, Thrumster, Whaligoe. We went up to Duncansby Head where the sun was shining. Great views over to Orkney as well as south to these amazing stacks. Duncansby Head is the true northeastern most bit of the Scottish mainland though most people think it’s nearby John o’Groats. Wonderful sea pinks as well as many fulmars, kittiwakes and razorbills nesting on the cliffs. Loads of visitors too – must be the North Coast 500 trail.

Anyway I had many choices of blip today but I’ve gone for the stacks. Sitting in the cafe at Gills Bay now waiting for the ferry over to South Ronaldsay. It’s just over a year since our last Orkney holiday and I’m very, very happy to be going back.

Apologies if commenting is slow over the next few days.

Having arrived in St Margaret's Hope I've cheekily added an extra of the sunset
