Don’t be a bystander
So we booked a couple of extra events today and I’m really glad we did. Both had an environmental theme. The first was by the makers of Our Planet which went from being nice nature programme to hard hitting critique of global warming. Amazing both in the medium and the message. 9/10.
After that we saw Mike Berners-Lee who has written There Is No Planet B, and who was intelligent and clear about the risks but did tend to pull his punches, particularly when it came to taking on big business and vested interests. And he didn’t say anything about meat consumption. 7/10.
In the early evening we went to an event that was billed as being about politics and authoritarianism. Actually it was about how to address all the -isms and intolerance in the world. Very laudable but the content was not good and the chairing uneven. 4/10.
We finished our day with improvisation - Paul Merton and Chums - which was a bit uneven but mostly funny. Particularly liked the retirement party and the Shakespearean sketches. Oh and the aliens taking over the pick’n’mix counter on a motorway service station. 7/10.
My key takeaway from the serious bit of today was "don’t be a bystander". Whether it is racism, right wing politics or climate change, if you’re not part of the solution you’re part of the problem ... And if you don’t know what to do - well, improvise ...
