May 29th - Oak Apple Day

In 1651 Charles II hid from his pursuers after the battle of Worcester by hiding in an Oak Tree at Boscobel in Staffordshire and subsequently escaping capture.    He returned to the throne on the 29th May 1660 and the celebration later became known as Oak Apple Day.
On the 29th May each year his supporters would wear a sprig of oak leaves in support of the king.  Anyone who did not wear oak was beaten with stinging nettles and had their hats pulled down over their eyes.
I didn't want to be be beaten with stinging nettles so I thought I'd better wear some oak sprigs.
