The "Boots" March Again
The 33rd Regiment of Foot...The Havercakes...The Immortals... The Duke Of Wellington's are back in town. Rawtenstall, to be precise, for the 1940s weekend.
It was jolly nice to see them once again. They were one of the local regiments when I was younger and more spry. I never enlisted in them, though, I fancied the footloose and fancy-free military life in The Royal Corps (oh yes!).
These lads were re-enactors from Haworth and thoroughly nice chaps. It was even nicer to see them also sport the 49th (West Ridiing) Division flash too, though like the 33rd, it has also been laid to rest. Sigh. So much history laid up in parish churches now. Will we see The Boots once again in real active service? Who knows? They've been disbanded and laid up many times before in the past and then re-activated. We'll just have to wait and see if The Immortals really will continue to live up to one of their noms-de-guerre. Hey oop!
