What is this?

This is a tree - but I have no idea what sort of tree. I noticed the purple blooms as I drove towards it - rather like lilac in colour but as I got closer I could see it was nothing like lilac flowers. It is about the size of an apple tree - quite old if the lichen is anything to go by, and only a few small leaves so far.
So, anyone know what it is, please? (extras too)
