Norge

This is the gravestone erected in memory of the nine survivors from the sinking of the SS Norge, who succumbed to the effects of their ordeal after landing in Stornoway in 1904.
The Norge had left Christiania (Oslo) in June 1904 for New York, with over hundreds of emigrants from eastern Europe, fleeing the persecution of Jews. Upon striking the outcrop of Rockall, the ship sank within 20 minutes. Several lifeboats managed to be launched, and dozens of people were saved from them by nearby fishing boats. One of these put into Stornoway. The death toll of the sinking of the Norge is over 700.
If the recommendation of the Board of Inquiry, that sufficient life-saving apparatus for all persons on board should be carried on every ship at sea, the sinking of the Titanic, 8 years later, might not have claimed as many lives as the eventual 1500.
