planting a seed..
...or in this case, a bulb.
Today I was at the Dumfries Environment Fair as part of a team from Dunscore Church Eco Group. The Fair is an amazing annual event which I have been going to since my children were small (over 20 years). In that time, it has expanded and now takes place at the UWS Crichton campus with stalls from many environmental and ecological groups, both national and local.
On our stall we encouraged children (and a few adults) to plant either a snowdrop or daffodil bulb in a pot which they made from newspaper. Importantly, the composts we used were peat-free. One was a commercial brand, the other was from the compost bin at the (presently vacant) manse. The last minister and his wife, while nurturing local souls for the past six years, had also been tending the manse garden and making the most amazing compost!
One of the good things about the Environment Fair is the number of nice people you meet there. You could easily come away thinking that everybody in the world is passionate about ditching single-use plastics, recycling, increasing biodiversity and fighting the climate emergency. I know that this isn't the case, but hopefully events like these might help to tip the balance a little.
