Looking for Petrified Wood

We spent a quiet morning doing exciting things like the wash. Then the four of us took off for Lake Mead National Recreation Area to go to a spot Steve and I found last time we were here. We wanted to show Dave who wasn't with us.

This is the same area we visited two days ago when Steve slid down the muddy bank and got covered in mud. We were hoping the ground would be dryer. Fortunately it was. We still found some mud but the going was much easier. We not only found the place we had been before but also a veritable treasure trove of petrified wood. It was concentrated in such a way that we could see where the old trees must have been. The pieces were small but really interesting.

We also went to an area where there was Breccia, angular rock in a sedimentary matrix. These also were small but really cool! They had a dark matrix with red, yellow and black inclusions. Nifty indeed.

Arvin stayed in the car and read as the walk was a bit beyond his sense of balance and confidence. He didn't mind as he found lots of interesting things to photograph in between reading sessions.

We all ate lunch at a rest area along the road and took the long way home via Boulder.

This evening we will be joining the rest of the family and going to the Ethyl M Chocolate factory where they have a wonderful cactus garden. Right now it is decorated with Christmas lights and there will be musicians there too. I know Bailey will love it. There will be the four of us, Emmett, Jen and Bailey, Sonny, Debby and April, Jen's parents and sister. It should be great fun. We are providing pizza for dinner afterwards.
