Trolleybus Museum

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY

Today I headed east on the M62 and down the M180 to the Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft near Doncaster.

The museum has over sixty historic trolleybuses in its collection including local buses from Bradford, Manchester and Huddersfield. Many of the vehicles are in full working order and a selection are available for rides.

Pictured is a 1939 London Transport Leyland 6-wheeler which was withdrawn from service in July 1961. It was one of three trolleybus that were operational and available for rides today. It’s not an open-top bus and it has an unusual roof with power collectors so I hope it just scrapes in the MM theme.

A number of visitors were kitted out in vintage attire. The buses and the 1950s shop fronts make an excellent backdrop for photographs.

I can vaguely remember the trolleybuses in Huddersfield and Bradford. The ones in Bradford were the last in the UK and were withdrawn in 1972.

Later in the afternoon I headed further south to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Potteric Carr Reserve but was disappointed by the lack of wildlife there today.  I did however manage to walk 6.5 km and was drenched when the heavens opened some 500m from the car park.
