African Savannah? No...over-grazed Hervey NNR!
This bare dry landscape would not be out of place in a drought stricken African plain. However, it is a very over-grazed Hervey Reserve, part of the Whitbarrow NNR. No place for creatures to hide, therefore very few creatures. Well, the scrawny birch trees look picturesque?.....no, perhaps they just look scrawny.
4 km butterfly transect yielded 12 butterflies and one bumblebee. Makes me wonder what wildlife is actually benefiting from the heavy grazing? Ah yes, I remember... it is called a farmer!
