A lovely walk today with Brodie along the River Dee towards Kirkcudbright.
On the opposite side of the river sprawls the Cumstoun Estate with this imposing house, in Tudor-Gothic style, built in 1828 with later additions in the 1890s. Beside it are the ruins of a 15th century castle.
Cumstoun came into the ownership of the Maitland family at the beginning of the 19th century and its most distinguished member was Thomas Maitland (1792-1851), a lawyer with literary interests who took the title of Lord Dundrennan when he became a Court of Session judge.
Before that he had been Solicitor-General for Scotland and MP for the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright.....……………...
