In the mortuary on Bloody Island

Today we visited the Isla de Rey in Mahon Harbour in Menorca. The British built a hospital here in 1711 which at various times and up to the 1960 still operated but was then abandoned. It’s now owned by the local town but maintained by volunteers.

One of its hero’s was George Cleghorn, a Surgeon, who carried out postmortems on over a 1000 men . His philosophy was reflected in this plaque on the wall of the mortuary.

And it means, ‘ This is the place where death delights to help the living’

I think Mrs UE wants to become a volunteer which probably means I do as well!
