Ripples in the sand
It was a delightful walk through the Nature reserve at Aberlady with the constant sound of skylarks, the distant calls of chiffchaffs and other birds, but unfortunately not the cuckoo which had been reported.  Orange tip butterflies fluttered past sometimes sampling the nectar of the Lady’s Smock flowers that are now emerging. Two deer watched from a patch of cowslips as we traversed towards the dunes and down onto the sands with barely a footprint visible.  At Gullane Point we sat among the pink thrift and yellow bird’s foot trefoil on the rocks as we watched male eider ducks trying to woo the females and saw gannets from the distant Bass Rock dive for fish in the calm water. Soon the place will be alive with young birds and butterflies but never with crowds of people.
