Napoli. Day Four
Easter Sunday
Dining at The Blue Lagoon
So far the weather has been a delight-warm and bright, perfect. But today was overcast and threatened rain, so we had a luxurious slow start, packed for the worst and then trundled slowly through our neighbourhood, Mergellina, trying to find a funicular that would drag us up to Vomero, a suburb high above Naples.
Rather impressively many of The City's services were closed down and most Neapolitans were at home gorging on huge Easter eggs, Pastiera and Columbo cakes.
So, intrepidly we changed plans and carried on walking through the eerily quiet, dilapidated alleys of the Spanish Quarter.
Past sleeping cats, dogs and vespas, under bloomers and bras flapping above. Beautiful rough, tough black volcanic stone slabs made slick and glinty by April showers paved the way to the centre of the city. We skipped up Via Pignasecca, WonderA's favourite market street, all shuttered up and drowsy except for a cafe on the edge of the tiny square where we sat feasting on coffee and sfogliatella before heading home, weary and wowed, yet again, but quietly this time.
Thank you Naples.
Later we joined the busy passeggiatta on the Mergellina promenade, catching the view of Vesuvius across the Bay before dusk. We were looking for supper and as sometimes happens didn't find any (even the beautiful lit-up snack bar was closing)...so instead we shared Pear and Risotto gelato then went home apologising to our churning stomachs, promising a good breakfast.
