And they say, reading broadens the mind.
I certainly hope so, otherwise this job will be even more cramped and uncomfortable than it already is. All day without sunlight and in the sweltering heat of Metro station can't be anybody's idea of fun.
Up close, you can see the similarities in Mexican culture and our own: lots of gossip, fashion, glamour, footbal, cars, history, puzzlebooks and kids activity books. Many titles you will recognise from home (wherever that might be).
However, you can also make out some of the distinct differences too
- the newspaper declaring "Muerte y Terror", while showing grim crime-scene photos.
- the ongoing fascination with anything to do with The Beatles.
- a very relaxed attitude to porn (see how some of it is neslted in nicely amongst some children's comics!).
- the comprehensive covering of the death of a very popular Bandamex (kinda like uptempo country with a very unhealthy sprinkling of German-style Oompa Oompa music thrown in, just to assault my ears further!) singer called Jenny Rivera, who died this week in a plane crash.
In many ways a small world and, similarly, another world entirely!
