Topography

The town of Kirkby Lonsdale is built next to the Lune River, on the western side. The bank rises quite sharply - as evidence by the steep Radical Steps that go from the river's edge to the church yard - to a plateau on which the bulk of the town is built, before rising again to where I live.

My garden faces east, looking towards the river, and in the evening, as the sun sets behind the house, the side of the valley casts a shadow over Kirkby Lonsdale while still illuminating the hills on the far side of the river. (I sometimes wonder if we'd be better off having the barbecue in the front garden but this makes me feel a bit squeamish, like I'd be breaking some unstated but widely understood etiquette.)

Today, we finished demolishing the shed, just leaving the base where it is for now.
