We were at the Lewis Grassic Gibbon Centre.. A community volunteer driven project, it is well worth a visit.
James Leslie Mitchell, -LGG his writing name was a slight modification of his mother's name- spent his childhood at Arbuthnott. I only learned in the last few days of his short but troubled life. 
Like Lord Byron and Robert Burns, he died in his mid thirties. Robert Burns' father (William Burness) also grew up in the How of Mearns several generations earlier. Farming/crofting life was no easier for Leslie's father than William.
