General Wade's Highbridge

Sometimes a rainy/windy day is what you need in an area like this, to get you exploring bits you have never before considered.

An excellent trail runs from the Commando memorial car park down to the river Spean where you then follow it along a spectacular wooded and rocky gorge to Spean bridge and back round to the start.

When you first walk down to the river, you double-back to join the route of the Invergarry & Fort Augustus railway where it crosses General Wade's old route at Highbridge (Tom Na Brataich Bridge or the High Bridge over yhe Speyan). Now ruined, the 18th century bridge was the site of the first action in the Jacobite uprising in 1745, just 10 years after it was built.

The route continues along the route of the old railway, detouring past the piers of an old viaduct (see extra) and back up to Spean Bridge. All the while the view over to the Grey Corries and Ben Nevis proving a spectacular backdrop.
