Regent's Park

I had time to kill on my journey back from Southend today, so instead of walking directly from Baker Street tube station to Marylebone I detoured through Regent's Park.

This is the view across the lake to one of the nine villas in the park. John Nash's original design commissioned by the Prince Regent in 1811 was for a palace and numerous villas, but in the end most of the plans were dropped. This villa, the Holme, was actually designed by Nash's protegé Decimus Burton whose work includes the Palm House and Temperate House in Kew Gardens.

The house is a private residence, but its garden is opened to the public several times a year through the National Gardens Scheme.
