One street, our street #3

We may have mentioned at some point that the Belair railway line runs at the back of our house. However at the bottom of the court where we live, the railway is so close you can almost touch it, as you can see from today's image #3 from our street.

The house you can just see on the right is at the very bottom of our cul-de-sac, and probably the one closest to the railway. The small suburban trains, such as this one, are very quiet, run on diesel and will soon be electrified. Seen even better in LARGE.

However, when a huge goods train goes through, it's a world of pain for these people close to the line. The trains are about 1.5 km long, going up to 1.8km in 2013, and there would be at least 3 or 4 every week night, and a couple on Saturdays and Sundays.

They are noisier than the loudest aircraft measured at Adelaide Airport, and although an alternative route could be built running north of Adelaide, it's not likely to happen due to the cost of 60 billion. It's marginally better for us, as the line and the street diverge towards our end of the street, but it's still plenty loud enough. You get used to it.

The worst times are on a hot summer's night when there is no wind, and the sound carries up past our house and probably on for several kilometres. Having said all that, we would not live anywhere else!
