Medals

At s period in our history when jumped up idiots who have parlayed a brief spell as a weekend soldier into a glorious military career, and who then bask in the undeserved media attention that their constant harking back to a war they never saw wins them, its worth reflecting on the sort of strife fools like them would happily countenance if it bought them five more minutes on Newsnight.

These medals are pretty much all my dad has of my grandfather; who was killed on HMS Courageous when is was sunk by a U boat in September 1939. He was 7 at the time, but he has no issue with Germany and doesn’t feel the need to be offensively jingoistic about the conduct of the Second World War in the hope of an interview with Emily Maitlis.

I can’t stand violence and yet I feel a visceral urge to punch these people in the face whenever I see their smug, ignorant appearances on TV. Enough. The war ended almost 75 years ago. Time to move on.
