It's Grim Up North

Furness Abbey

Second most important Cistercian monastery in the country between 12th and 15th C, wielding power and influence across northern England, Ireland and Southern Scotland. (Fountains Abbey was the biggest.)

The Abbey is situated in what is now the back end of nowhere, in the delightfully named Nightshade Valley. Consequently there were only about twenty people here over a three hour period on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Abbots Wood in extras.
