Well fed on cast off bread
Even now, nearly 30 years after the big psychiatric hospitals were closed to be replaced by small inpatient units at general hospitals, staff remember those days and sliced white bread is provided for morning tea. Much more than patients and staff can eat, so sparrows do well.
Or do they? Obesity seems rife in the sparrows I see around the unit. They are birds which have evolved to eat seeds and grains, not highly processed, cardboard tasting soft bread.
This sparrow was outside the window of my office, and seen during one of the brief times I could sit down to try and deal with emails. After a weekend of multiple patients being unable to be admitted due to lack of beds, Monday was spent shuffling people around; discharging some, putting others in different spaces, and admitting those in need.
Glad to be home.
