Nunton - Clanranald's seat

An English name I hear you say, unusual in the isles. 
The normal refrain is that it is a translation of the Gaelic name Baille nan Cailleach meaning town of the nuns, on account of the presence of a nunnery nearby.
But the name Nunton was around in 1700 if not earlier and it is interesting to see that the Norse for nun is nunne - not a real surprise as they would have borrowed the word. So nunne-tun in Norse would mean dwelling of the nuns. Possibly a more obvious root?
Our guests have been lucky with the weather today as the sun came out and there was a real clarity. Their second night tonight before heading down to the wilds of South Uist.
