Please take off shoes outside wooden board.
Captured this when entering Yakushido, a temple located in the precincts of Toshogu Shrine. The sign on the wooden board is asking you to take off your shoes, not on the wooden board but off the board.
We didn't really intend to visit the temple; the rain was finally coming down and so we wanted to get out of it.
At the temple you can experience what is called 'naki-ryu': 'naki' means cry and 'ryu' means a dragon in Japanese. Once the staff strikes clappers at a certain place in the hall, the sound echos, which has been likened to a cry of the dragon drawn on the ceiling. However it doesn't echo if clappers are struck at any other point in the hall.
