At last!
Someone on Blip saw Cécile McLorin Salvant in Europe a few years back and posted a link, and I've been a fan ever since. Was it Barrioboy? Veronica? Guiri? DHThomas? Or maybe it wasn't even in Europe, maybe it was FolkieBooknerd, who is my mentor in all things musical. Whoever it was, they started something. And finally she came to Portland with the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour, and Sue got us tickets. An amazing voice--range, control, tenderness, power. She has it all. (She also has a degree in law, earned in France.) It is one of the great concerts of our lives.
But actually, the piece I remember best is a version of an aria from Tosca, arranged and played by Christian Sands, with Yasushi Nakamura and Jamison Ross. An astonishing piece. It went on and on and on and nobody wanted it to ever stop.
The touring group is three women, three men, and more than three times better than watching them on Youtube.
The photo isn't much, but wow. That concert.
