History
Ramunė was telling me recently how, as a teenager in Soviet Lithuania, she listened to a Polish radio station a lot. It was more liberal than anything the USSR offered, and legal.
Then she confessed to listening to Radio Luxembourg as well. 100% illegal. Friends could not discuss it. One might have been a KGB informer.
The other weekend I noticed this book recommended in the Sunday National. I ordered it.
The author was deported from Lithuania to Siberia in the 50s, like so many others. She managed to escape and get back to Lithuania. She wrote her autobiography and buried it in a tin in the garden, to hide it from KGB searches.
After her death, someone found it and it has been published. Translated into English too.
