Crossness Pumping Station

Today I ticked off a visit to somewhere I’ve wanted to go for a few years, the sewage pumping station at Crossness in South East London.
Named the ‘cathedral on the marsh’ when it opened in 1865, Crossness was built by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and part of his modernisation of London’s sewer system. The Victorian ironwork inside is beautiful and so detailed and the remaining working beam engine ‘Prince Consort’ was a treat to see in steam. It was all worth the faint and sometimes strong aroma that wafted in from time time.
