Building a Biggar Bonfire
Fire seems to be an important part of New Year celebrations. Might be something to do with dealing with the past, getting rid of past demons and out of the fire comes renewal. Might also have something to do with keeping warm.
I remember being terrified in Stonehaven at the parade of folks swinging fire balls down narrow streets with hot tar going off in all directions. I greeted the new year with gratitude for survival!
The good folk of Biggar build a bonfire in their main street to be lit on Hogmanay. Not just any bonfire but the biggest I've ever experienced. At its height flames reach above the town making it look as if the centre is well alight. All nearby wooden frames are protected with custom made shutters. And there is no problem keeping folks from it - no-one can get near. The bonfire sits on about 18 inches of sand which protects the cobbles, apparently it used to melt the road tar!
It is a tradition - one that would be very difficult to start off these days.
A good opportunity to record progress and try out the panorama function on the iPhone.
