Loch of the Lowes, Perthshire

Following the return of the regular male osprey LM12 on the 15th March, the nature team at Loch of the Lowes was relieved to see his mate LF15 join him last Saturday. It's amazing they have  flown the long 3,000 mile journey back to Scotland from somewhere in West Africa, to raise a brood. This photo is the view from one of the hides at the reserve open to the public and equipped with powerful telescopes. As well as being a haven for ospreys, this reserve is home to red squirrels, beavers, otters and many small birds such as the extra photo of a yellowhammer. Often seen perched on top of a hedge or bush, singing, its recent population decline makes it a 'Red List' species.
