Conservation in action on the High Street

Another day with Cumbria Wildlife Trust, this time on the Peatland Restoration Project on Bampton Common near High Street, between Haweswater and Ullswater. Contractors have been using excavators to cover eroded peatland with turf, but our job was to collect and replant clumps of bog mosses (Sphagnum spp) amongst the disturbed areas to encourage formation of peat (see extra). It was a long walk into the site, but the sunshine made the work a lot easier!
