Desperately seeking

Eleanor Wharton

We had a trip down to Kirkby Stephen today to pick up some janitorial supplies for the lodge. We like to combine this with a look around the town centre and a lunch out.

I find the parish church fascinating, partly because the Anglicans and Roman Catholics have found a way of sharing a lovely building for their communion services and masses. It's been built on the site of an old Saxon church and contains a lot of ancient relics.

The Wharton Chapel has these effigies of Thomas, the 1st Lord Wharton and his two wives. Thomas founded the local Grammar School in 1566 but what drew me to take an interest in the family was seeing the name, Lord Wharton. I remembered it from Philip, Fourth Lond Wharton who set up a fund for providing bibles for children which continues to this day.

I always remember how much my mum loved her copy.
