3 am

Deeply asleep in my hospital bed, woken by a light tap on my shoulder by someone in red scrubs. The bloods nurse, smilingly apologetic. Time to take a blood sample. At 3 am? Yes, exactly 12 hours after a new intravenous antibiotic was started. Those dreaded, now very familiar words: ‘sharp scratch’. Ouch, and goodnight. Again.
