Severn Bore from Minsterworth

The regular to and fro of the majestic river Severn has tidal surges, or bores, when the the incoming tide overwhelms the outgoing flow of the river. Their ferocity depends on weather conditions and, obviously, the Moon. Today was marked up as a five star daylight bore, the best kind and the only one this year.

In the end it wasn't quite as spectacular as others I've witnessed. Perhaps today Minsterworth wasn't the right place to be, and as it rolled up the river from the Bristol Channel the cries of other folk caught in the inundation were clearly heard.

But you get what you get, and here is the surge rolling up and around the curve in the river, just beside the church at Minsterworth. The location did however have the advantage of good parking for Morrigan, in the village hall car park, where afterwards bacon butties were to be had.

The next good one is in September, at night. On these occasions it's less the sight of it and more the sound. It's like a steam train thundering past and the only warning you get is the headlight of a madly brave surfer - and the wet feet.
