The smooth barked trees (Sycamore, Beech, Birch) in the woods near the path often have carvings. Some new, but mostly old. Those with dates are my favourites, the oldest I've seen is 1952. 
This one might be difficult to see in the blip but it is quite large, on the right hand trunk.
