Pandemic legacy, Season 1 : July, second attempt
This time through July, Hannes played the Quarantine Specialist, Leander the Dispatcher, Tarek the Researcher, Kobe the Soldier and Me the Medic.
This game (as we decided last time) we really wanted to include the soldier because :
- He does not gain a scar if you begin your turn in a city with Faded figures
- For an action you may pick up an equipment card from the discard pile (during the game we discovered that there is no limitation for this action, so he can use an equipment card (say grenade belt (blow up one Faded figure), and take it right out of the discard pile again)
- After playing this game we wanted to give him the following useful upgrade : paramilitary escort (Whenever you leave a city with a Faded figure, remove 1 figure from that city). In essence he will only need to go from one city to another to get rid of the Faded figures with no risk at all.
So in this game Kobe picked up a lot of equipment cards (grenade belt) from the discard pile, which helped a lot in controlling the Faded figures, which up to now has always been a problem.
As we lost our last attempt at July and were playing with 5 players, we were allowed to use 5 funded event cards, which came in very useful.
We rapidly discovered a cure for the red disease and with a little effort managed to clear it from the board (fulfilling 1 objective).
Quickly thereafter we also managed to clear the black disease from the board, making it a lot easier for us, because those cities (red and black) could no longer be infected.
Next we managed to discover a cure for the blue disease (fulfilling a second objective : cure 3 diseases) but didn't immediately clear it of the board, because a third objective (place quarantine markers in 7 Faded city) was really close.
So, everyone concentrated on putting as much Quarantine markers on Faded cities on the board without putting themselves in danger (ending up in a city with Faded figures without another move). All now depended only on us not getting another epidemic. Which we did not, and we finished this game, winning the month. On checking, we noticed that the next card of the player deck would in fact have been an epidemic, so we had some luck there.
As game-end upgrades we chose :
- the Paramilitary escort-upgrade for the soldier (as explained earlier)
- the final virus-upgrade that was left for the black disease (possible because we eradicated it), Efficient to Sequence (you no longer need to spend an action to discover a cure for this disease)
Next time we play August.
