Glasgow Tenement Painting
I've had a lovely day meeting bestie Gill for lunch at The Loch House near Lochwinnoch. We both chose the carvery for our main meal of the day, but refrained from alcohol since we were both driving.
When we moved through to the lounge for a cuppa after two hours, I noticed this painting (and another - see extra) by John M. Boyd on the wall. Both scenes depict the old Glasgow tenements with their back courts and wash-houses which were the playgrounds for the children who lived there.
I was fascinated by the detail in both paintings: boys playing football, girls skipping, others climbing on the wash-house roof and the abandoned car; dogs joining in the games; washing on the line and higher up.
And can you see the lad hoping to catch the 'piece' (sandwich) that his maw is flinging oot the window from the second storey? That custom inspired the "Jeely Piece" song by Adam McNaughtan when families were moved from the city tenement slums out to high-rise blocks of flats.
I don't know how many, if any, of these old tenements remain.
