The Tree of Remembrance
I was in the city centre again registering with a recruitment agency. I think I'm now with the 3 that specialise in PA work so will leave it at that and hope something comes up soon.
All these agencies have been in very new tower blocks. When you arrive, the receptionist pre-programmes the lift for you and it will only go to the floor you are visiting as there's no buttons for you to press. I guess restricting access for visitors to the specific floor maintains security.
The Tree of Remembrance is a memorial to the civilians of Manchester who were killed during WWII. The metal sculpture was designed by Wolfgang Buttress and Fiona Heron and was erected in May 2005 on the anniversary of VE Day. The metal rings around the trunk are engraved with the names of the people who lost their lives.
One article about the Tree says "it's a piece of public art that seems to capture the reflective, sorrowful mood of its theme. It also merges and matches with the real trees and the urban landscape".
If you watched Ed Stafford's 60 days on the streets, you probably wouldn't agree that "the Tree makes a walk across Piccadilly more enjoyable"!
It was my younger niece's birthday today. My brother is going to be out of pocket in 3 years time when they hit both 18 and 21 in the space of 4 days!
