Merkland Cross

I've driven past the sign to this many times, but haven't investigated until today. 

Just off the M74 a few miles north of Gretna is this little known gem. Nobody knows much about it, save it's a Catholic symbol and was probably a way marker of some sort. From the design it is thought to date from as far back as the 1400s, although it since been restored and placed on a new base.

Just as I was walking back to the car, there was a guy walking towards me. You can guess what he said. "I've driven past the sign to this many times ..."
