Victorian Christmas

The table is set so all is ready for a sumptuous Christmas feast. This is the dining room at Haddo House, a Victorian mansion originally designed by William Adam in 1730, but refurbished in 1860. It is now looked after by the National Trust Scotland. Normally only open by prior arrangement.

Today it was open to the public decorated for Christmas. It did look very homely with log fires lit in several of the rooms. So much so that when I went into the main sitting room I had to remind myself not to sit in one of the antique armchairs next to the fire. Instead I stood in front of the fire feeling quite patronal!

This photo shows the dining room, somebody has just come in. I do not remember from her attire whether she was a member of the Victorian household staff or a Victorian guest at the house.

The House is about 20 miles North of Aberdeen. Today the rooms looked very attractive with the Christmas decorations, and probably even more homely than it would normally. In another reception room we obtained a warm fruit punch (and a mince pie) and were able to occupy legitimately the leather armchairs next to the log fire. Well worth a visit today.
