Thursday 2019 — Educational Choices

Two of our college counselors were presenting information to my students today. Their goal is to help students understand the path and the procedure to successfully get through the community college and transfer to a university.

Students are unaware of application deadlines, the number of college credits needed to transfer, the GPA requirements of one university system versus another system (UC or CSU), nor do they know the specific classes they need to take for the major they want.

Some students spend years getting through the 2-year college. It is more than wasteful; it is ridiculous. It is a waste of their time and of a lot of their money and government money given in financial aid.

The photo I’ve posted reveals that there are 23 California State University campuses and 9 University of California campuses. Students have a lot of choices and they have a lot of decisions to make. There are 114 community colleges in California.

The hour the counselors spend with my students is very informative; however, it is not at all related to my course and the curriculum that I teach and giving away that hour means that I am “cramming” and “rushing” through the next hour to stay on schedule with the curriculum for my class.

From Southern California,
