A Gift

Sometimes life reminds us that every day is a gift and we should treasure it.

Today we attended the funeral of our friend Willie who bravely suffered through a year of cancer. He leaves behind three grown children from his first wife and two teenagers who have just become orphans. How proud he would have been today of the courage shown by his young daughter and son who had to bury their second parent in less than three years. They stood strong in their aloneness and I hope the presence of my family gave them comfort today.

J is a child of my heart and has been since his mom passed away suddenly in 2010. His sister L is also still a child and we will watch over them as long as they need us. Their family was not around much before but their offers of support seem genuine now. We have to let them do what is their duty but will assist in any way if they children need us. I know J will want to be with us as much as he can and we will take care of his emotional needs.

He spent the weekend with us and it was tough to have to get him dressed today to attend the funeral. I know he was glad that we took him there and were able to hold him at the graveside. Our love will never fade for these two special children. I know they are destined for great things!
